UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

What is a UPS?

A UPS is a critical component of physical infrastructure that ensures uninterrupted operation of essential IT and network equipment during power outages, surges, or other electrical disturbances.

Placed between the power source and the equipment, a UPS provides direct protection against data corruption, system crashes, and unplanned downtime. During an outage, the UPS supplies battery power until electricity is restored or a controlled shutdown can be performed.

Types of UPS Solutions:

  • Online UPS (Double Conversion): Provides constant output without switchover time—ideal for sensitive or critical equipment.
  • Line-Interactive UPS: Corrects voltage fluctuations and quickly switches to battery mode when needed.
  • Offline UPS: Basic protection, mainly used in less critical environments.

Common Applications:

  • Ensuring uptime for servers, switches, firewalls, and storage systems
  • Used in data centers, network hubs, hospitals, monitoring systems, and communication equipment
  • Can be integrated with monitoring and alerting services for proactive management
